As it happened: Apple announces founder Steve Jobs dead

  • Apple founder Steve Jobs dies of cancer
  • Company mourns loss of "creative genius"
STEVE Jobs has died surrounded by family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is being remembered as a creative genius, a visionary who changed the world and the way we live.
CURATED NEWS, REACTION, MULTIMEDIA BELOW | ALL TIMES AEDT
3.12pm The last word here goes to the San Francisco Chronicle, the paper of Jobs's home town.  It notes that Jobs was not just Apple's founder but also its saviour.
The Daily Mail
SFgate.com, the website for the San Francisco Chronicle - the city where Steve Jobs was born - reports his death on October 6.
2.31pm People are leaving flowers at the Apple Store in Sydney.  There are reports via Twitter of similar impromptu shrines at Apple Stores in other countries too.
These images are from the New York flagship store:

2.13pm This image is doing the rounds.  It's not clear who made it or when - although it seems to have originated from this Tumblr post today.  Since it has already dropped in our inbox a few times so to that extent, we thought it was worth including:

2.09pm If you're a fan of Scrubs or a fan of emoticon humour, you might get a kick out of this:
2.02pm Disney CEO Bob Iger looks ahead to the next generation of innovators who will follow in Jobs's footsteps.
"His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built.  It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined.
"Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started."
1.52pm Time for a catch-up - we've compiled a video package as a comprehensive wrap of today's news, showing the legacy of Steve Jobs as well as the announcement of his passing.

1.34pm Now take a look at the life and times of Steve Jobs
Steve Wozniak

It was 1975, and Steve Jobs (left) and Steve Wozniak were, amongst otherthings, playing around with various pieces of tech, included the 'bluebox' (pictured), which (somewhat illegally) allowed users to makelong-distance calls for free. One year later, they had made and wereselling the Apple 1 // Picture: Steve Wozniak, Woz.org
1.28pm This is kind of cute.  In a perfect example of the Apple-PC divide, it turns out there's more to that Twitter box tribute we mentioned in our 12.56 post.  It's actually a special character for the Apple symbol...if you're using a Mac.  That seems to be how it began as a tribute.
But if you're on a PC, and therefore don't have that special character, you see a box...which people have interpreted as a representation of the close-box.
1.21pm Through Apple's products, Steve Jobs touched lives all across the globe - even if you have never owned a Mac or an iPod or iPhone or an iAnything.  And we've been focusing so far on that legacy and the tributes being sent by the biggest names in the tech business.
Here is a slightly different take - personal accounts from tech insiders on meeting or working with Steve Jobs.
1.11pm Google has added Steve Jobs, 1955 - 2011 to its home page.  The Apple founder's name links through to the Apple website.

1.06pm Here is a look at Steve Jobs's life through a collection of facts and trivia compiled by News Ltd's national news desk.

What a Life

1.03pm As Obama (and others) have noted, Jobs also had an impact through his association with Pixar.  Disney Pixar has posted on Facebook a photo of Jobs in an empty movie theatre with Pixar's bosses John Lasseter and Ed Catmull.
Steve took a chance on us and believed in our crazy dream of making computer animated films; the one thing he always said was to simply 'make it great.' He is why Pixar turned out the way we did and his strength, integrity and love of life has made us all better people
12.56pm A makeshift tribute is gaining ground: Tweeting this symbol  to represent the old school Mac close-box.  Looks like it's catching on, with a box tweet coming through every couple of seconds.
12.51pm President Barack Obama has released a statement on behalf of himself and his wife Michelle, mourning the death of Jobs.  President Obama said Jobs "exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity" and "brought joy to millions of children and grownups with Pixar".
"Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.
The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.  Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him."

12.27pm Boing Boing has reskinned its home page to look like an old Mac program.

We also produced this visualisation for yesterday's iPhone announcement.  It shows how Apple has focused on product development while it's competitors have acquired other companies to force market share.  Read the story to see how Apple is also becoming a little like Microsoft.
12.19pm More tributes for Steve Jobs from the people he competed against and inspired:
Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder: "People sometimes have goals in life. Steve Jobs exceeded every goal he ever set for himself."
Mark Zuckerberg: "Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you."
Larry Page: "He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me."
Marc Andreessen, Netscape co-founder:"Steve's work made the world a better place for hundreds of millions of people."
12.06pm UPDATE: This is Wikileaks' response to the caning they're getting on Twitter after releasing documents they claimed were Steve Jobs's personal medical records:
Their argument seems to be that all they have done is publish a link to "purported" private medical record.  That is still not lowering the temperatures on Twitter, however:
12.01pm
11.54am Steve Jobs died peacefully, surrounded by family, according to a statement published by TMZ.com.
"In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family.
"We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve’s illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.
"We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief."

11.47am DEVELOPING: There's been a shooting at HP's campus in Cupertino, California - Wired reports it's a multiple homicide and the gunman is still at large.  They have locked down three buildings at the Apple complex too.
It appears as though it's an unrelated crime, but the gunman shot and wounded a HP employee before stealing his car to get away.  Wired cites an Apple employee as saying the "Homestead, Ridgeview and Tantau" buildings are in lockdown.
11.41am This is included further down this page, but here it is again in case you missed it - Apple has set up an email address for anyone to send in their tributes to Steve Jobs.  It'srememberingsteve@apple.com.
11.38am America's CBS News elaborates on the point made by ZDNet below - that Jobs changed more than just the tech industry.
"Jobs more lasting legacy will be his impact on disrupting entire industires, bringing the music business kicking and screaming into the 21st century and transforming the mobile device landscape.
"Jobs was more of an orchestral conductor, charismatic and dictatorial, assembling the people and pieces of existing and emerging technology to craft an object of desire that reflected his personal aesthetic and vision for how people and machines should interact."
11.36am  ZDNet makes the point that Jobs revolutionised threeindustries in his time, making him one of the most influential people not just in modern tech, but in the entire history of American enterprise.
"One of the most legendary businessmen in American history, Jobs turned three separate industries on their head in the 35 years he was involved in the technology industry."
11.33am Bill Gates has praised Jobs's "profound impact", saying he will personally miss him "immensely".
"The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come ... I will miss Steve immensely."
11.32am This is the email new Apple CEO Tim Cook, who took over from Jobs only a few weeks ago, has sent to the company's staff just now:
Team,
I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
We are planning a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon. If you would like to share your thoughts, memories and condolences in the interim, you can simply email rememberingsteve@apple.com.
No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.
Tim11.31am The New York Times has published a piece showing all the patents which have Steve Jobs's name against them.  Amazing.
11.28am Here's our wrap of today's news of Steve Jobs's death, with more detail on the timeline of his battle with cancer.  And here's something from our friends at The Punch - a review of Jobs's legacy when he announced his resignation as CEO of Apple in late August.
11.21am This is terrible - there's talk on Twitter that Wikileaks has published a link it claims shows Jobs's personal medical files.  They're claiming he had HIV.
Not surprisingly, the reaction on Twitter is furious.
11.18am In this video, Jobs talks up the virtues of Apple's new iCloud service.  It is his last public appearance for the company he built.

Last public appearance of Steve Jobs

When Apple's Steve Jobs introduced the new iCloud music and data streaming service, it was his last public appearance for the company.
11.14am This is how Wired is remembering Jobs:
"A visionary inventor and entrepreneur, it would be impossible to overstate Steve Jobs’ impact on technology and how we use it."
11.08am Mat Honan, senior reporter for tech site Gizmodo, has written a tribute to Steve Jobs, saying he was a "myth made man", who the Gizmodo crew will miss deeply and personally.
"Bill Gates may have put a computer on every office desk, but it was Steve Jobs who put one in every dorm room and bedroom and living room.
He was our emblematic genius. In 100 years, when historians talk about the emergence of the age of intelligent machines, it is Steve Jobs they will hold up as the great exemplar of our era.
He was not a god. He was simply a man.  Goodbye, My Jobs.  We will miss you so very much."
11.02am We'll have reaction on what this means for Apple and the rest of the tech industry coming soon - but first we take a moment to remember the man himself.  This video shows Steve Jobs giving a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005 - his theme: "How To Live Before You Die".
If you can't watch the full video, see the transcript here.
Some key quotes:
"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
10.50am Apple confirmed the news in a statement on their website.
“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” the statement said.
“Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”
