Flappy Bird is the next big smartphone hit
- 2 DAYS AGO FEBRUARY 06, 2014
WHAT is our obsession with birds? First it was Angry Birds, now the next big mobile game set to rock our devices is Flappy Bird.
Yet to hear about Flappy Bird? Well it's played like this: you tap the screen to propel these tiny, weird-beaked pixelated birds in between these green pipes. If you hit the green pipes while you try to reach your unreachable goal, you lose. The aim of the game is simply to get the highest score for bragging rights over your friends and family.
The thing is, it's actually really hard. I only managed to get an abysmal high-score of 3, so you will likely spend hours trying to get anything over 5.
Already, the app has been downloaded 50 million - as much as Google's Gmail app.
The game's creator, Dong Nguyen created the game in just a few nights after he got home from work. Now he earns an average of $50,000 a day thanks to in-app advertising.
The Vietnamese developer also has a few other games that surface themselves around the top 10 in the App Store, including Super Ball Juggling and Shuriken Block - but neither have taken off like Flappy Bird has.
It's the type of game that makes you want to throw your phone at a wall, but for some reason you find yourself crawling back to every time.
You have been warned.
