Report shows Australians watching more on every screen - TV, mobile, tablets and computers
- 9 HOURS AGO JULY 16, 2014
AUSTRALIANS are increasingly turning to tablets and computers to tune into video but the amount of time we sit in front of a TV continues to grow.
The latest Australian Multi-Screen Report released today shows while we are finding new ways and places to catch up on our favourite shows, the extra viewing time is not coming at the expense of our traditional method of sitting on the couch in front of the family telly.
The report found people spend an average of 93 hours and 16 minutes watching broadcast television a month, which is up 37 minutes on the same quarter last year.
That 93:16 hours of broadcast TV watching is split between 86:01 hours of watching live TV and 7:15 hours of watching playback TV on the TV set, with playback TV viewing growing by nearly half an hour viewing time compared to a year ago.
While children under 12 found an extra 3:29 minutes to squeeze in more television time a month, the real TV fans are their parents.
People aged 35-49 spent 57 minutes more sitting in front of a TV a month than they were doing 12 months ago.
On top of the time we spend in front of the TV watching shows, Australians spend 7:48 hours a month watching video on a computer or laptop, 1:56 hours watching video on a smartphone and 1:47 hours watching video on a tablet.
The report found about 70 per cent of Australians own a smartphone (up from 61 per cent a year ago), more than a quarter of Australian homes now have an internet capable smart TV and 42 per cent of homes have a tablet (up from 31 per cent).
With all of those screens, we’re addicted to multi-tasking. The report found 74 per cent of people aged 16 and over use the internet while watching TV.
The report found key trends for different age groups:
* Kids: under-13s are more likely than other age groups to use TV for other uses, such as gaming.
* Teens: 16-17 year old spend the most time watching video on mobile phones (8:48 a month) and are must likely to multitask — 89 per cent report using the internet while watch TV.
* 18-24s: spend the most time watching video on connected devices. They watch 24:07 hours of video a month on PCs compared to the 45:14 hours they spend watching TV.
* 25-34s: nine in ten say they multitask, using the internet while watching TV.
* 35-49s: watch 57 minutes of TV more a month than they did last year.
* 50-64s: this is the age of TV domination, with this demographic watching an average of 124:37 hours of broadcast TV a month, plus 9:40 hours a month of Playback video, 5:20 hours per month viewing video on a laptop and 1:16 viewing video on a tablet or smartphone.
The Australian Multi-Screen Reports combines data from OzTam and Nielson ratings.
