Jim Carrey is an artist: Documentary shows actor painting in New York studio

CELEBRITIES don’t get too far these days if they’re just one trick ponies.
Whether it’s a reasonable singing voice, killer dance moves or a flair for the visual arts, most famous people generally keep a hidden talent up their sleeve these days.
And Yes Man star Jim Carrey is one of them.
The 55-year-old actor recently participated in a mini documentary called I Needed Colour and in it he shows off his exceptional talent as an artist as a camera follows his work in his vast New York City studio.

The video, uploaded late last month, was directed and produced by David Bushell.
It goes through Carrey’s artworks as it films the actor painting, sculpting and explaining why he got into art in the first place.
“When I really started painting a lot I had become so obsessed that there was no where to move in my home. Paintings were everywhere. They were becoming part of the furniture, I was eating on them,” he says.

The actor revealed his passion came after walking around New York City one day “in a really bleak winter” .
“It was just so depressing. I needed colour,” he says.
“You can tell my inner life by the darkness in some of them. You can tell what I want from the brightness in some of them,” he adds.

Carrey has had a dark few years following the suicide of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White in 2015.
A year after her death, White’s mother filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the actor alleging he provided her daughter with the drugs that killed her.
“I don’t know what painting teaches me, I know it just frees me. Free from the future, free from the past, free from regret, from worry,” he says in the video.
While Carrey’s talent mightn’t be news to some, it was a tweet from basketball superstar Lebron James yesterday that seems to have brought the actor’s incredible abilities to the attention of the rest of the world.
The Truman Show star also speaks about the first time he decided to paint, revealing he moved away from his original passion of sketching to heal a broken heart.
“I sketched all the time, but I didn’t do a lot of painting. Suddenly, six years ago, at a time I was trying to heal a broken heart I thought well, maybe I’ll paint,” he said.
Whether the actor is referring to his relationship with actress Jenny McCarthy or his on-again, off-again relationship with the late Cathriona White is unclear.
McCarthy and Carrey announced the end of their relationship in April, 2010 after five years of dating with the former-Playboy model writing, “I’m so grateful for the years Jim and I had together.
“I will stay committed to Jane (Carrey’s daughter) and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart.”

Carrey’s relationship with White, an Irish make-up artist, began in early 2012.
In September, 2015, less than a week after it was reported the couple had broken up, White was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment by apparent suicide.
Carrey was a pallbearer at her funeral.
In October, 2016, White’s mother brought a lawsuit against the 55-year-old actor, alleging he supplied his ex-girlfriend with the drugs — Ambien, Propranolol and Percocet — that killed her.
The Dumb and Dumber star denied all the allegations, with his lawyers describing them as “malicious” and “predatory.”

Despite Carrey’s denial, the actor will likely face trial over the lawsuit, with the case expecting to be heard by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge later this year.
